Road Signs
![]()
Road signs? What's that? Ah, you mean those boards with names of towns, which are supposed to tell foreigners where to go? Ha ha haa!! Yes, there are even some of these in Cape Town! But they are rather few and far between! I was a bit scared, I must admit. I hate driving a rental car in a strange city. Driving in South Africa requires you to have eyes on all sides of your head at the best of times - and more if you are a stranger to a place and don't know where you are going! When I drove my parents, who were visiting from overseas, through Cape Town years ago, I already got lost between the Airport and the Hotel! But this time it was going to be different, firstly I had the state-of-the-art Cape Town Street Guide with me, and secondly an excellent co-driver who knows how to read maps! Well, we did not too badly between the airport and Kirstenbosch. And after that we even found the right Freeway to take us straight to Paarl. So we drive, happily chatting away - oops, I am in the wrong lane! The second I saw this it was already too late - the road forked and I had to go left. Shucks!! No problem, we just take the next off-ramp and turn back and start again. Easy. Or so I thought. Nothing easy about that if there is no turn-off! After a long stretch driving north parallel to the harbor we finally managed to get off, but there was no way of turning back. Well, we did a 'sight seeing tour' around Milnerton until we figured out where we were and could at last turn east again! I am only bringing this up because we are not the only ones! Of what I heard every visitor to Cape Town gets lost there at least once a day! So, Jerry, this is just one of the specials the City puts on for tourists, it's part of the experience! And we got it all! After all we were both strangers there! Maddy © 2000-2005 The Great Petaluma Desert |
